An English ad in France needs more than subtitles

France's Toubon Law requires French in advertising. An English ad with French subtitles still asks people to read while someone talks in another language, and a French reshoot for every winning ad is slow.

    The usual way
    • English voice with French subtitles
    • A separate French shoot or studio voiceover
    • English words left in because nobody checked
    • Slogans and names translated by mistake
    With GeckoDub
    • French speech in the speaker's own voice, with French subtitles if you want them
    • Dub the footage you already have
    • Read every French line before any audio is made, and edit it on a paid plan
    • A glossary keeps them as written

Three steps to a French version

1Upload your adPick French, then Basic or High Quality lip-sync (GoSync 3.0), or none. MP4, MOV and other common formats, up to 512 MB and 30 minutes.

2Check the French scriptOptional: read the French next to the original. On paid plans you can replace English words and settle tu or vous before it's voiced.

3Dub and downloadApprove the script, then download the French file and upload it to your ad account.

The free test dubs about 15 seconds, at reduced quality; paid plans dub the full video at full quality. You can read the test script, but edits apply on a paid plan. GeckoDub changes the speech, not the picture: English text burned into the video stays English, so replace it in your edit before the ad runs in France. GeckoDub doesn't publish to ad platforms.

Worried a French dub will look fake? Test it.

Upload the clip you think will break it: fast talking, music underneath, a hand near the face. Your 2 free test translations can use HQ lip-sync.

Same clip, product held in front of the mouth. Left: other AI dubbing. Right: GeckoDub.

Lip-sync that holds up in real ads.

Real ads have products, mics and head turns in front of the mouth. That's where most lip-sync breaks. GeckoDub is built for these shots.

We edit your real ad. We don’t generate a new one.

GeckoDub doesn’t create an AI avatar or a new video. It keeps your real footage, your products exactly as they are, and your real speaker with their own voice, cloned. Only the mouth is re-synced to the new language. That’s why it looks natural: it’s still your ad.

“Will a new voice break the ad?”

    Voice

The dub uses the speaker's own cloned voice, so you need their permission to clone their voice and face.

    “Will my slogan get translated?”

    Glossary

Mark brand names and slogans "do not translate", or set a fixed French wording for phrases such as your delivery promise.

    One line, localized

Turn on Proofreading to check the transcript and the translation first: product names, slang, technical terms.

    1
Fix the original transcriptCorrect the source once. Sync carries it into every language, so each translation starts from the right words.
    2
Edit any suggested translationSwap a word or phrase for one that fits your brand better, right in the translated script.
    3
Lock names in your glossaryAdd product names once and they stay the same in every language and every video.

Script editing is part of the paid plans. In the free test you see the same review step, but your edits aren’t applied.

    An English slogan, made French
    OriginalShop the new drop today.
Dubbed versionDécouvrez la nouvelle collection dès aujourd'hui."Discover the new collection, starting today."
"Shop" and "drop" are replaced with French words instead of being kept as English. "Découvrez" uses vous; a brand that says tu would write "Découvre". English "you" doesn't show which one you mean, so check the form in the script and keep it the same through the call to action.

French voices for France, Belgium, Switzerland and Quebec

The app has four French options. Each one sets the voice, and where the region's French differs, as in Quebec, the script follows it too. Check it before you scale.

    French (France)

For France, and the usual choice for French-speaking Africa. Plain "French" in older projects is this option.

    French (Belgium) and French (Switzerland)

A Belgian or Swiss voice. Numbers are the ones to watch: "septante" and "nonante" instead of France's "soixante-dix" and "quatre-vingt-dix", and the script can still use France's forms. If a price is spoken aloud, check it in the script editor on a paid plan.

    French (Canada)

A Quebec voice, and a script with Quebec words such as "courriel" and "fin de semaine". Test a clip with Quebec viewers before you scale it. Quebec's Charter of the French Language also requires French in commercial advertising there.

Check these before your French ad goes live

    1

English words and the Toubon Law

Look for spoken English slogans and calls to action ("shop now") in the script, and for English text on screen, which GeckoDub doesn't change. This page is not legal advice; check what your ad needs with your adviser.

    2

    Length

French usually needs more words than English. The translation aims to fit each line to roughly the original speaking time, so on a paid plan trim long lines rather than letting the voice rush.

    3

    Punctuation and prices

French puts a space before "?", "!", ":" and ";", and writes prices as 19,90 €. Check both in your subtitles and price lines.

Yes. French (Canada) uses a Quebec voice, and the script uses Quebec words where they differ from France. If you advertise in Quebec, test a clip with local viewers before you scale it.
