Shipping to sixteen countries with content in four languages

Snow Monkey ships to sixteen European countries and runs its website in four languages: Slovenian, Czech, Croatian and English. Three of those markets get a full storefront in their own language. Most Slovenian brands of this size run one storefront, in English.

That gap says a lot about how the company is run. Snow Monkey sells more than 100,000 products a year, is stocked in around thirty shops, and has built a second business selling corporate gifts. All of it runs from Polzela, a municipality of about 6,400 people. Few Slovenian consumer brands of its age operate at that width.

Video was the one part of the operation that could not keep up, and not for want of trying. A demonstration has to be filmed, and a filmed demonstration only exists in the language it was filmed in.

The product makes it harder. Snow Monkey has to show you what a flask does. Twelve hours hot. Twenty four hours cold. Still working after being dropped down a mountain.

You cannot show that in a photo. Someone has to pour the coffee, leave it overnight, then pour it again the next morning. If that person speaks Slovenian and the viewer is in Warsaw, the video still looks good but the point is lost. Subtitles do not solve it either, because the viewer is meant to be watching the flask, not reading text in the corner of the screen.

Translating product demonstration video for neighbouring markets

Ana Drev stood on World Cup podiums and went to two Olympics before she started Snow Monkey. Then she kept herself out of the advertising. "Many didn't know I stand behind the brand," she told Večer. She wanted people to buy the product, not her name.

Most founders with that record would have put their face on the packaging. Drev built the brand so the product could carry it instead, which is a harder route and a more durable one.

It also turned out to be the right call for going abroad. There is no well known face in the videos. Nobody has to be recast for another country, and nobody is missing when a German or Polish viewer watches. The videos move into other languages without looking borrowed.

The product names do need protecting. Traveler, Go-getter, Buzz, Wander Tote and Kids Mixtape are English on purpose, and they already sit inside Slovenian copy. Go-getter is the risky one, because word for word it means nothing in most languages. All five are locked in a glossary so they come out exactly as they went in.

Sixteen countries, and a demonstration that had to be filmed. The limit was never ambition. It was the shoot day.

Localising product video into three languages with GeckoDub

Video now goes out in Slovenian, Czech and Croatian. Those are the three markets where Snow Monkey already has a shop in the local language.

110 videos have been translated so far. A Czech or Croatian customer now sees exactly the video a Slovenian customer sees, on the same day, with the demonstration intact. For a product you have to show rather than describe, that is the difference between a video that sells and one that is only watched.

Seasonal campaigns show it best. A Christmas or back to school campaign used to launch properly in Slovenia. Czechia and Croatia got a smaller version weeks later, by which time the season was over. All three now launch in the same week. That is the only way seasonal spending works.

Thirteen more markets are already in the plan. Adding one now takes a day rather than a production, so a company that was always going to get there is simply getting there faster.

Snow Monkey never treated the smaller markets as an afterthought. Now the video does not either.
