GeckoDub vs Meta AI dubbing for ads. Which one fits your ad?

Meta Ads Manager can now translate and dub a video ad's voiceover. Here is what Meta documents, what it doesn't, and when its built-in tool is all you need.

What Meta's generative AI translations do for ads

In Ads Manager, Meta calls the feature "Generative AI translations". It sits with the Advantage+ creative enhancements and has three parts: text, voice and image-overlay translations. You turn it on per ad in a Translations step, pick languages and preview each one before you publish.

The voice part translates and dubs a video's original voiceover. Meta lists it for single video ads with voiceover on Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Instagram Reels and Instagram Stories. The source must be English, and there are 13 target languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, German, French, Tagalog/Filipino, Chinese, Italian, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch and Turkish.

Meta then shows each person the language it predicts they prefer, inside the same ad; some people may see the original if their language isn't supported. After publishing, Ads Reporting compares results by language. Meta says it is gradually expanding the feature, which may not be available to you yet and may be limited for some industries and Special Ad Categories.

    Side by side

Meta's column uses only Meta's own help pages and terms, numbered below. Where Meta's ads documentation says nothing, we say so instead of guessing.

    Where the result runs

    GeckoDub

A video file you download and upload to any ad platform: Meta, TikTok, YouTube or anywhere else.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Inside the Meta ad. Meta delivers the translated version to people based on their predicted language preference. Meta's terms don't allow using the output outside Meta's platforms.[1][6]

    Source language

    GeckoDub

    57 spoken languages, detected automatically.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

    English (for voice translation).[1]

    Target languages for voice

    GeckoDub

48 languages, with regional options such as German (Austria) or Portuguese (Brazil).

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

13: Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, German, French, Tagalog/Filipino, Chinese, Italian, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch, Turkish.[1]

    Placements and formats

    GeckoDub

Any. The file keeps your video's resolution and aspect ratio.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Single video ads with voiceover, on Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Instagram Reels and Instagram Stories.[1]

    Speaker's own voice

    GeckoDub

Yes, the dub uses a clone of the speaker's voice.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Meta's ads help says it will "translate and dub your video's original voiceover" but doesn't say whose voice the dub uses. It promises the creator's own voice only for its separate Reels tool.[1][4]

    Lip-sync

    GeckoDub

Optional: standard, or HQ for close-ups with hands or products in front of the face.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Not in Meta's ads documentation. Meta documents lip-sync only for its separate Reels tool for creators.[1][4]

    Review the script before dubbing

    GeckoDub

Optional: read the translation next to the original, edit any line, then dub. Product names can be locked in a glossary.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

You can preview each language before publishing (first 6 seconds, then the full video). Meta shows no translated script for the voice and doesn't describe editing it; the translated headline and primary text can't be edited.[1][2]

    Subtitles

    GeckoDub

Optional animated subtitles: pick one of 26 fonts and set your brand colors.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

A separate "Video subtitles (AI)" enhancement: subtitles generated from an English voiceover, on Instagram Reels only, in Instagram's standard font and color.[3]

    Text in the picture

    GeckoDub

Not translated in videos. Static ad images can be translated with GeckoDub's separate image translation.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Overlay translation covers single image ads on Facebook and Instagram Feed, from English into 6 languages. Videos aren't listed.[1]

    Cost

    GeckoDub

Monthly plans paid in tokens; a free test without a card.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Meta's help pages and generative AI ad terms list no separate fee.[1][2][6]

    Availability

    GeckoDub

    Self-serve sign-up.

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Being "gradually expanded"; "may not be available to you yet"; not in South Korea; limited for some industries and Special Ad Categories.[1][2]

    AI labels

    GeckoDub

GeckoDub doesn't add C2PA or other AI-content metadata to the file. Meta can still label ads under its own rules, so follow its disclosure rules for your region.[5]

Meta Ads Manager: Generative AI translations

Meta's label examples are background generation, image generation and animation; translations aren't listed. Ads Manager tells you before publishing if a label will apply.[5]

Where Meta doesn't document something for ads, we say so. We re-check Meta's pages regularly; the date at the top shows the last check.

When Meta's built-in tool is enough

If your ad is a single video with an English voiceover, your target language is on Meta's list, and the ad will only run in Facebook Feed or Instagram Feed, Reels and Stories, try Meta's translations first. It's built into the ad you already have, you can preview each language before publishing, and Ads Reporting splits results by language.

It also suits ads where nobody speaks on camera, such as a product demo with narration, because then lip-sync doesn't matter.

When GeckoDub is the better fit

    Your original isn't in English

GeckoDub translates from 57 spoken languages, so a Slovak, German or Polish original can be the starting point.

Your market isn't on Meta's list

Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Croatian, Greek, Swedish and other languages are among GeckoDub's 48 target languages but not among Meta's 13 voice languages.

    The speaker is on camera

Face-to-camera and UGC ads need the lips to match the new words. GeckoDub has lip-sync; Meta doesn't document it for ads.

    Translating UGC ads

You want to check every line first

Review the script, fix a line and lock product names with a glossary, then dub.

    How script review works

You run the same ad outside Meta

You get a file per language for TikTok, YouTube or your website, and you can run each language as its own ad with its own budget. Meta's terms don't allow using its translations outside Meta.

Your account doesn't have the feature

Meta is expanding it gradually and limits it for some industries.

    What GeckoDub costs

A minute of video uses about 8 tokens for translation only, about 20 with standard lip-sync and about 40 with HQ lip-sync. The free test needs no card: two test translations of about 15 seconds each, at reduced quality. That is enough to compare with Meta's preview of the same ad.
