HeyGen is one of the best-known AI video platforms, and it does considerably more than the "avatar tool" label suggests. It also prices everything in credits, which makes it hard to answer the only question that matters at renewal time: how much localized video does this plan actually get me?
Below is HeyGen's pricing as published at the time of writing, the credit-to-minute math for translation work, and an honest read on where other tools — including ours — fit better. Prices change; verify on HeyGen's pricing page before committing.
What HeyGen Is Built For
HeyGen started as an AI avatar platform and still leads with that. You write a script, pick a stock or custom avatar, and the platform generates a presenter video from scratch. Around that core it has added video translation, voice cloning, and lip-synced dubbing of existing footage.
What it does well:
- Avatar video generation from a script, with a large stock avatar library and custom digital twins
- Very broad language coverage — 175+ languages on paid plans
- Voice cloning and lip-synced video translation of existing footage
- 4K export on higher tiers, plus API access and business integrations
The important nuance is that all of this shares one credit balance. HeyGen is a general-purpose AI video studio, so the same credits that translate your ad also generate avatar videos, and a team doing both is dividing one pool between two very different jobs.
HeyGen Pricing, Tier by Tier
Free — $0/month
Three videos a month, up to one minute each, with access to the stock avatar library and one custom digital twin. Fine for evaluating output quality; not a production tier.
Creator — $29/month, or $24/month billed annually
600 credits a month, videos up to 30 minutes, 1080p export, voice cloning, watermark removal and the full 175+ language list. This is the realistic entry point for an individual creator.
Pro — $49/month
1,000 credits a month, 4K export, translation script editing and faster processing. Credit allocations scale upward from here into much larger volumes — the top of that ladder runs into thousands of dollars a month — so Pro is really a family of plans rather than a single tier.
Business — $149/month plus $20 per seat
1,500 credits a month, videos up to 60 minutes, five custom digital twins, SSO, SCORM export and integrations with tools like Zapier and HubSpot. Note the seat charge stacks on top of the base price, so a five-person team is meaningfully more than the headline figure.
Enterprise — custom
Flexible credit allocation, unlimited video length, multi-workspace controls, SCIM provisioning and a dedicated success manager.
What Credits Actually Buy for Translation
HeyGen publishes credit rates for its localization features:
- Audio dubbing (translated voice, original video): 2 credits per minute
- Full video translation with lip-sync: 5 credits per minute
So Creator's 600 credits work out to roughly 120 minutes of lip-synced translation per month, or 300 minutes of audio-only dubbing — assuming you spend nothing on avatar generation. Pro's 1,000 credits give you about 200 minutes of lip-synced translation.
On raw minutes per dollar, that is competitive, and any comparison claiming otherwise is out of date. The catch is the word assuming: every avatar video, every regeneration and every experiment comes out of the same balance. Teams that use HeyGen for both avatars and localization routinely find the translation budget is whatever the avatar work did not consume.
Limitations Worth Weighing Before You Subscribe
Credit forecasting is genuinely hard
Two teams on identical plans can get wildly different output depending on feature mix. If you need to promise a client a fixed volume of localized video each month, a credit pool shared across an entire AI video studio is an uncomfortable basis for that promise.
Seat pricing on the team tier
Business bills a per-seat fee on top of the base subscription. For an agency adding reviewers and account managers who rarely render anything, that adds up quickly.
The workflow is production-first, not campaign-first
HeyGen is designed around producing videos. Localization teams work differently: same creative, many languages, many variants, reviewed and shipped as a batch. Tools built around that pattern give you bulk upload, per-language review and glossary control as first-class features rather than as steps you repeat by hand.
Output length ceilings by tier
Video length is capped per plan — one minute on Free, 30 minutes on Creator and Pro, 60 minutes on Business. Long-form localization pushes you up the ladder regardless of how many credits you have left.
Alternatives by Use Case
GeckoDub — localizing existing ad and creator footage
GeckoDub is built for one job: taking video that already performs and making it work in another market. It clones the original speaker's voice, applies GoSync lip-sync, and adds animated subtitles and brand-consistent terminology, across 70+ languages.
The practical differences from HeyGen:
- Tokens buy video translation and nothing else — no avatar generation competing for the same balance
- Smart Translation Control and proofreading let you fix a product name or a claim before the render, not after
- Bulk upload on Creator Pro and Scale, for shipping a campaign's worth of variants in one pass
- EU-based and GDPR-compliant processing, which matters when the footage is a named creator's face and voice
Pricing is €25/month (Starter, 100 tokens, about 13 minutes), €79/month (Creator Pro, 350 tokens, about 45 minutes, with bulk upload and animated subtitles) and €199/month (Scale, 1,000 tokens, about 155 minutes, with priority support). See the pricing page for current details.
Where HeyGen wins: if you need avatar-generated video from a script, GeckoDub does not do that at all.
Synthesia — corporate training and internal comms
Similar avatar-first capabilities with a stronger enterprise and LMS story. Worth a look if your content is onboarding and compliance rather than paid social.
Rask AI — long-form YouTube and podcast dubbing
Focused on long-form single-speaker translation. Strong at what it does; lighter on campaign-scale batch workflows. See our Rask AI pricing breakdown.
ElevenLabs — voice-only work
Best-in-class synthetic voice if you need audio without touching the video. Credits are shared across its whole audio suite — the details are in our ElevenLabs dubbing pricing breakdown.
How to Choose
Choose HeyGen if you are generating videos from scratch with avatars, you want one platform covering both generation and translation, and your team can live with a shared credit pool.
Choose GeckoDub if your source material already exists and performs, preserving the original speaker's voice and face matters, you are shipping many language variants of the same creative, or you need EU-based processing of biometric voice data.
Choose Synthesia if the use case is corporate training with LMS integration.
Choose Rask AI if you are dubbing long-form single-speaker content rather than running campaigns.
Most teams do not need to choose once and forever. Avatar generation and creator-footage localization are different jobs, and the tools that lead at each are different tools.
