How to Translate Videos to Portuguese with AI

GeckoDub offers two Portuguese variants — Brazil and Portugal — and the choice isn't cosmetic. The two differ far more in speech than on the page, and the wrong one is obvious to a native listener within a sentence.

Brazilian vs European Portuguese

• Pronunciation is the big gap. European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels, which makes it sound clipped and consonant-heavy; Brazilian Portuguese keeps vowels open and is easier for outsiders to follow. A European voice in a Brazilian ad reads as a mistake rather than as an accent.
• Grammar differs in everyday constructions. Brazil says você está fazendo; Portugal says tu estás a fazer. Forms of address, pronoun placement and progressive tenses all diverge.
• Common vocabulary splits — celular vs telemóvel, ônibus vs autocarro, tela vs ecrã. Spelling has largely converged; the words people actually say have not.
• Tone. Brazilian advertising leans warm, energetic and informal; Portuguese advertising is typically more restrained.

Which one to run

Brazil is where the volume is: over 200 million speakers, media costs well below Western Europe, and one of the world's heaviest Instagram, TikTok and YouTube audiences. Portugal is a smaller, more expensive EU-market play — worth its own variant, never a shared one.

Dubbing tips

• Portuguese runs longer than English, often noticeably. Tighten the script in Smart Translation Control before the hook drifts out of sync.
• Brazilian Portuguese is spoken fast and rhythmically. Let the cloned voice keep that energy rather than flattening it to English pacing.
• Watch the numbers. Comma as the decimal separator, prices in R$ for Brazil and € for Portugal — on overlays as well as in the voiceover.
• Animated subtitles earn their keep in Brazil, where mobile video and sound-off browsing dominate.
